1. BenvenutI Ulvand! Prima di tutto parlateci del vostro ep di debutto, “The Origins”. Com’è nato e come siete arrivati all’ottimo risultato finale?
Serge: Grazie per il complimento. La nostra band esiste dal 2018 come Ulvånd, ma ci conosciamo da 20 anni e abbiamo avuto altri progetti prima (In Lupus Pacis, Leiden). Ci siamo incontrati a una festa e abbiamo sentito la scintilla. Abbiamo deciso di avviare un nuovo progetto e produrre 2-3 titoli per divertimento, e poi abbiamo sentito il bisogno di sviluppare ulteriormente il progetto. Abbiamo scelto di registrare un E.P, che sembrava il formato migliore. L’EP “The Origins” è stato rilasciato a marzo 2020. Ci siamo presi davvero del tempo perché non volevamo affrettare le cose, la nostra priorità era rilasciare un prodotto di qualità, non una semplice demo. Dato che avevamo pochi mezzi finanziari e non avevamo un’etichetta, abbiamo optato molto rapidamente per l’opzione di autoproduzione. Fare tutto da soli ha richiesto molto tempo, ma alla fine abbiamo fatto davvero quello che volevamo. Durante la registrazione, il missaggio e l’artwork, Wilfried ha avuto molto lavoro! Alla fine, abbiamo delegato solo il mastering e il pressing.
2. Chi ha realizzato la copertina dell’album e cosa rappresenta?
Wilfried: Ho fatto io la copertina (sono stato addestrato come graphic designer). Questo ha ridotto drasticamente i costi e mi ha permesso di abbinare davvero l’artwork con la musica per avere un oggetto coeso. Per quanto riguarda la rappresentazione, ognuno avrà la propria idea, ma grosso modo il pontone rappresenta la vita così come le scelte che si devono fare in determinati momenti. Ma preferisco lasciare che le persone facciano propria questa copertina.
3. Troviamo anche molte influenze di musica elettronica nella vostra musica oltre alla base gotica / dark. Chi ha portato queste influenze nel gruppo?
Wil: Dopo aver composto i titoli di questo E.P, mi permetto di rispondere a questa domanda. Mi piacciono le miscele nel metal. Questo stile consente molte possibilità. Per quanto riguarda le band, nelle mie influenze elettroniche, citerei N.I.N, Rammstein, Jean-Michel Jarre, Goldfrapp, Samaël e altri.
4. Come sono state finora le opinioni su “The Origins”? Siete soddisfatti?
Serge: Le recensioni per “The Origins” sono molto buone e le reazioni molto positive, è incredibile! Abbiamo avuto molte recensioni per un primo EP, grazie in gran parte al lavoro di Monica ATZEI (Infinity Heavy) che si prende cura di noi per la stampa estera. Vogliamo ancora ringraziarla dal profondo del nostro cuore per tutto quello che fa per noi.
5. Quali questioni affrontano i vostri testi e chi è l’autore?
Serge: Ho scritto i testi di questo EP, in futuro anche Bérangère intende essere coinvolto nella scrittura. I nostri testi trattano vari argomenti, temi che ci toccano. Può essere un tema caldo, come ad esempio in Una Vida, che tratta del conflitto in Siria e della sofferenza di un popolo. Può anche essere una storia che ci ha commossi, come Human Zoo, che racconta la storia di Abraham Ulrikab, un Inuit di Hebron in Canada che è stato esposto con la sua famiglia negli zoo umani in Europa alla fine del XIX secolo. O semplicemente lodiamo i valori umani e filosofici che apprezziamo particolarmente (7 Virtues). Affrontiamo anche argomenti più generali ma ugualmente emotivi come i genitori che affrontano la perdita di un figlio (Disperazione).
6. In questo particolare periodo dovuto al Covid-19, quanto è importante per voi Internet per una band?
Wil: È essenziale per una band. Dopo l’uscita del nostro EP a marzo, avevamo programmato di fare dei concerti, ma al momento non è possibile. Fortunatamente, Internet ci permette di promuovere un po’ ‘”The Origins” e di condividere recensioni e interviste mentre aspettiamo che lo spettacolo dal vivo sia nuovamente possibile.
7. A cosa state lavorando attualmente? State per caso lavorando su nuovo materiale e forse su un intero album?
Wil: Al momento abbiamo 3-4 tracce in arrivo, anzi stiamo progettando di pubblicare un album, questo è il passaggio logico, ma ancora niente di concreto in termini di tempismo. Faremo le cose bene, anche se questo significa prendersi del tempo. Abbiamo lavori impegnati e vite familiari, il che ci lascia poco tempo per assecondare la nostra passione come vorremmo.
8. Come ultima domanda lascio la parola a voi. Saluti e complimenti per “The Origins”, che abbiamo recensito positivamente sul nostro sito!
Serge: Beh in questa situazione particolarmente delicata, gli spettacoli vengono progressivamente cancellati, non esitate a sostenere gli artisti procurandosi le loro opere, perché questo è ciò che permette a molti artisti e band di sopravvivere e mantenere un legame con il pubblico nonostante l’assenza di concerti e spettacoli. 1. Welcome Ulvand! First of all tell us about your debut ep, “The Origins”. How was it born and how did you arrive at the excellent final result?
Serge: Thanks for the compliment. Our band exists since 2018 as Ulvånd, but we have known each other for 20 years and we’ve had other projects before (In Lupus Pacis, Leiden). We ran into each other at a party and felt the spark. We decided to start a new project and produce 2-3 titles for fun, and then we felt the need to develop the project further. We chose to record an E.P, which seemed like the best format. The EP “the Origins” was released in March 2020. We really took the time because we didn’t want to rush things, our priority was to release a quality product, not a simple demo. As we had few financial means and did not have a label, we very quickly opted for the self-production option. Doing everything ourselves took a lot of time, but in the end, we really did what we wanted. Doing the recording, the mixing, and the artwork, Wilfried had a lot of work ! In the end, we only delegated the mastering and pressing.
2. Who made the album cover and what does it represent?
Wilfried : I did the cover (I was trained as a graphic designer.) This drastically reduced the costs and allowed me to really match the artwork with the music to have a cohesive object. As for the representation, everyone will have their own idea, but roughly, the pontoon represents life as well as the choices that you have to make at certain times. But I prefer to let people make this cover their own.
3. We also find many influences of electronic music in your music besides your gothic / dark base. Who brought these influences to the group?
Wil: Having composed the titles of this E.P, I allow myself to answer this question. I like mixtures in metal. This style allows a lot of possibilities. As for bands, in my electronic influences, I would quote N.I.N, Rammstein, Jean-Michel Jarre, Goldfrapp, Samaël and others.
4. How have opinions on ′ ′ The Origins ′ ′ been so far? Are you satisfied?
Serge: The reviews for “The Origins” are very good and the reactions very positive, it’s amazing ! We had a lot of reviews for a first EP, thanks in large part to the work of Monica ATZEI (Infinity Heavy) who takes care of us for the foreign press. We still want to thank her from the bottom of our hearts for all that she does for us.
5. What issues do your texts address and who is the author?
Serge: I wrote the lyrics for this EP, in the future Bérangère also intends to get involved in the writing. Our lyrics deal with various subjects, themes that touch us. It can be a hot topic, as in Una Vida, for example, which deals with the conflict in Syria and the suffering of a people. It can also be a story that moved us, like Human Zoo, which tells the story of Abraham Ulrikab, an Inuit from Hebron in Canada who was exhibited with his family in human zoos in Europe at the end of the 19th century. Or simply praise human and philosophical values we particularly cherish (7 Virtues.) We also tackle more general but equally emotional subjects such as parents confronting the loss of a child ( Despair.)
6. In this particular period due to Covid-19, how important is the Internet for a band to you?
Wil: It’s essential for a band. After our EP release in March, we had planned to do shows but that’s not possible right now. Fortunately, the internet allows us to promote “The Origins” a bit and to share reviews and interviews while we wait for the live performance to be possible again.
7. What are you currently working on? Are you by any chance working on new material and maybe a full-length?
Wil: We currently have 3-4 tracks on the way, indeed we are planning to release an album, that’s the logical step, but nothing concrete yet in terms of timing. We will do things well, even if it means taking the time. We have busy jobs and family lives, which leaves us little time to indulge our passion as we would like.

Serge: Well in this particularly delicate situation, the shows being gradually canceled, do not hesitate to support the artists by procuring their works, because this is what allows many artists and bands to survive and keep a link with the audience despite the absence of concerts and shows.
